                                                    BJP: Nouveau In Power?

There is a term nouveau rich which qualifies those who are newly rich and who in their speech, manner and actions flaunt their wealth. In adapted manner if you coin the phrase nouveau in power, it would appropriately fit the BJP. If you introspect on the various issues that have dogged their rule since 2014, you will see that this phrase suits them like they say to a T. Whether it was the secularism issue unfairly tagged as intolerance, then the sacred cow issue notorious as the beef ban, etc. etc. The list is long but we can fast forward to what has been on the national scene for the last month or so. Take the case of stalking that was reported in Haryana where a State BJP's son was supposedly involved. But for the spunk shown by the victim girl and her father to come onto national television and expose the perpetrators, the matter would have gone the way of the celebrated Nirbhaya rape incident in December some 4 years ago in Delhi or the way of hundreds of rape incidents since that day that have taken place across the country and particularly in northern India. Even in the above stalking incident, the case took the usual turns with first denial by the perpetrators, then the father, the BJP leader, being judgmental about women behaviour like what was she doing out alone near about midnight, then casting aspersions on the victim's character with the police putting in their bit in assisting those with power by first not registering the case, then not testing the perpetrators for alcohol, then claiming that CCTV footage was missing. But the victim and her father admirably stuck to their guns and finally a case registered, eureka the CCTV was recovered/reconstructed and the perpetrators arrested. The father, the BJP leader, when he found that there was no other way to hush up the case pontificated - Let justice take its course. Whether the case will run its course is another matter but at least a start has been made. The problem with the BJP is that they believe that by throwing their weight around things can be suppressed and when this does not happen, they are somewhere all at sea as to how to handle the adverse publicity. This is where they fail in experience. Is it that in previous regimes across the country such incidents did not happen? They did even including under the Congress but with the experience in handling many such embarrassments a lid was put on such incidents so that it did not splash all over in the media generating bad publicity for the persons involved and the party concerned. When it comes to pursuing women, we need to recognise that in northern India, it is a bloodsport. It is the satisfaction of the men that counts and the woman is purely an object to give pleasure.

In another context related to death of babies in Gorakhpur be it because of lack of oxygen or because of advanced encephalitis, the manner in which the BJP government in UP got negative publicity also shows a lack of deftness to avoid the public eye. Not only that Amit Shah while commenting on the incident, questioned - Did babies not die during the Congress rule? Now that is a blaise remark like no other and absolutely insensitive considering that the fatalities involving babies are at issue. Are we keeping count on how many babies died during your regime and how many in mine? And the one with the lower number WINS! Is this the mentality of the BJP top leadership? Babies have died in similar number in West Bengal in a number of incidents across the State a couple of years ago at which time the BJP made a big noise about it but now when it happens in UP governed by the BJP everyone should put a finger on their lips and keep quiet. The TMC in power then was smart enough to get the issue off the public radar and quickly. But the BJP in the Gorakhpur case was running around like a bull in a China shop and digging themselves deeper and deeper into a mess with each pass. Maturity counts and the ability of  dealing with public issues with tact and diplomatic acumen. It will come with time but the BJP has still a lot to learn.

Concluding, the BJP does not lack in the will to do things but unfortunately it has not harnessed yet the ability to put through things with ease and efficiency. Examples are as we have seen the Demonetisation exercise and thereafter the GST exercise that we are currently going through. The people at large and those directly in the line of implementation are being put to untold confusion, difficulty and nuisance. A wiser and more balanced approach would probably have brought better returns. This rawness in handling operational matters which slows down the process of reforms is what has resulted in imported gurus like Arvind Panagariya, the ex- vice Chairman of the Niti Aayog, the new incarnation of the erstwhile labouring Planning Commission,  to return back to their foreign pastures claiming a Columbia University is the job of his life which he does not want to put at stake!

Railway Operations & The Minister's Resignation

With 2 derailments in 4 days in the Railways, Minister Suresh Prabhu's resignation and PM Modi's asking him to hold on for some time is all like play acting to the gallery and for consumption of the general public to anoint a halo around Prabhu's head. In fact if Prabhu is really taking responsibility for the accidents then he should have resigned long back since many accidents and more serious than the last 2 have taken place earlier. If you look at the record of accidents  in the Railways since 2014 and for similar period going back 3 years from 2014, you will find that the number of accidents ad fatalities in Railway operations have actually increased. This has been primarily because the Railways have neglected the creaking infrastructure of tracks, rolling stock and signalling. Instead the emphasis has been on faster trains, needless facilities like wi-fi connectivity on trains and luxury features to ape airline travel and lastly the Bullet Train that is supposed to ply between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. All this when the focus should have been for clean, safe and secure travel for common citizens with hygienic catering. We need not ape the developed countries but concentrate what is good for our country and its people while improving our Railways. This way we will set up another standard for the rest of the world to recognise and maybe emulate. That precisely is not being done. Concluding, changing the Minister is not going to help the Railways and the country. What needs to be done is an exhaustive SWOT analysis of the Railway operations and concentrate on removing the obvious flaws.

Stop Tree Cutting Otherwise Be Prepared To See India Becoming A Desert

Across the country there is a massacre going on of trees. Giving any kind of excuse trees are being cut, left, right and centre. From 91 trees slated for the axe for the East-West Metro in Kolkata; to random trees being cut in Rabindra Sarobar, the green zone in South Kolkata. In the name of development, small or big, trees are at the first line of attack. Be it for street widening or for any reason a tree will surely fall. It is not only in Kolkata that this is happening but across the country in every town and city.

Cut to Mumbai and you will find the contractors for the construction of various development projects in the city be it the Metro mainly and any other are the first to raise the axe against trees. In this they show no scruples and are adept at bending and/or breaking rules, even BMC decisions and the judgments of the courts. For the Metro some 400 odd trees were allowed to be cut but activists there have found that close to double some 700 odd trees were felled. Not only that in commitments made by construction authorities to the courts about planting of new saplings close to the number of trees cut, it was found that in many cases no action was taken to plant new saplings even though 1-2 years had passed. There have also been more than 1400 incidents since this year's rains started in June of trees or branches falling out of which there have been 40 odd human fatalities apart from other injuries to people and destruction of public and private property like cars parked in the street etc. The reason for this is that if you go to Mumbai and walk around you will see that the concrete pavers used for pavements or concreting  is done right up to the trunk of the tree. Thus over time with lack of water and nourishment the tree starts to weaken and progressively die. So by natural circumstance it falls and then it hurts or kills people and damages property. Similarly when it comes to the trimming of trees, it is done in a lopsided manner and only the portion of the tree that is assumed to be dangerous is trimmed leaving the tree unbalanced. This leads to the tree growing in a lopsided manner and again poover time it collapses on the side which is heavier. In both the instances cited above the complete lack of supervision by engineers and leaving the work to illiterate or semi-skilled labour  is what is at the crux of the issue. If the work is properly supervised then there will be be less of tree falls and with the labour being properly trained, we can at the least expect to have better times ahead. When it comes with dealing trees that grow by the roadside, why the PWD cannot have a standard to be applied across India that a 1 meter radius should be ensured around each tree so that the tree can continue to flourish is something that one cannot understand. Also for trees in the middle if the road why they cannot build a verge for it or have the road pass around it like in a traffic island is something that is beyond comprehension.

Now move to B'lore, first it was for the Metro that the trees were cut and well-laid out gardens which the Metro wanted to dig up. The citizens protested and put up a stop to some of that in certain areas. Now the Metro in those stretches and areas moves to elevated sections or avoided the green areas.  Thus the Metro in the city because of citizen protests were compelled to respect green cover. Though some trees were lost forever. Here again like in Mumbai, the authorities in charge of construction, private of otherwise, cut more trees than they were permitted and planted lesser number of saplings to compensate for the trees that they had cut. The latest in B'lore is that Indira Canteens are coming up across the city on the lines of the Amma Canteens in Chennai to serve cheap food to the people. To construct these canteens some 300 or more the Municipality is appropriating children's playgrounds, open spaces etc. and wherever there are trees they are being cut indiscriminately since the Indira canteens are a political initiative and the first brunt for that is borne by open spaces and trees.

In Goa where we live, the story is the same with some irony being thrown into the issue for good measure. About a year ago, the coconut tree that is represented in every ad or brochure that the government puts out was declared a Grass and the protection for its cutting was withdrawn. The idea behind this was to demean this tree of which every single portion is of use to mankind and more so Goans to the status of a grass so that you could cut it randomly just like mowing the grass on your front lawn! The citizens of the State were up in arms seeking restoration of the protection of the coconut tree. Thankfully with the new government led by Manohar Parrikar that has come to power, it has not only restored the status of the coconut tree and the protection given to it but raised it to the level of the State Tree. Now the last part was not required but it is a case of overdoing something when you have made a mistake. But elevating coconut tree to State Tree has dislodged another tree. This has set the cat among the pigeons among the tree lovers questioning the displacing etc. but all this one would believe will end with both trees getting the same status to satisfy the rival lobbies. Like they say in democracy everyone gets to be heard. Other than this the situation about tree cutting is the same as enumerated above with the road widening and 4 laning of National Highways that crisscross this small State taking its toll on the trees and green cover. Not only that Nitin Gadkari's pet project of converting the Goa-Mumbai highway into a beautified expressway involves cutting of some 1000 trees in Ratnagiri district alone. Though activists have raised their arms in uproar one doubts whether they can withstand the might of the Minister of Surface Transport.

In all this sometimes the Forest Ministry and Depts., both Central as well as State, are complicit in cutting of trees. Thus when protectors turn killers the harm is more grievous and irreparable. As one knows and there is no need to recount here, the reason why this is done is corruption both of the kind like for promotions etc. and in normal material terms. Since when these people from the Forest Dept. are brought in as experts, they give strange logic. Like the tree the older it gets the roots go deeper into the ground and there is no need to leave any space around the tree trunk and if the tree is old like 40-60 years there is no harm in cutting it! To the latter logic then the government should launch a pogrom  to kill all those humans who are older than 60 years so that the younger are better served!  Another thing that they claim is more saplings will be planted than the number of trees being cut but there is no guarantee that first, the saplings will be planted as the Mumbai Metro has seen inspite of a commitment given to the High Court and whether these will grow to trees like who will tend them, protect them from stray cattle eating them etc. etc. Then the Forest Dept. Is prone to quote more often than not that the forest cover in the State and/or country is going up. Now this figure is not verifiable by any independent agency and whatever they say goes.

Thus if we are at all serious in this country about protecting trees and our green cover then our laws should be recast and stringent punishment given for any unauthorised tree cutting and damage to green cover. All trees should be treated as sacred as our scriptures have instituted and they should be cut in absolutely necessary and unavoidable circumstances. Otherwise whether it be in construction of private dwellings, housing complexes, public buildings and large projects, the tree should be the primary focus for saving and construction should be around it and avoiding it. If at this present rate the destruction of trees continues in the whole country, then in the course of the next century India will get denuded and will become a desert like the Gobi or Kalahari or Sahara and with temperatures going up our future generations will wonder why it is so hot and it will be because we failed in our duty to stop tree cutting now.

                                                       The Infosys Crisis

The Infosys crisis is brought upon by Narayanamurthy refusing to give up the reins of the Company and on one pretext or other criticising the present management that had resulted in CEO Sikka's resignation. It is easy to pick on issues when you are outside the Co. more so when you happen to be the founder with access to some of the employees inside the Co. who are bound to show allegiance to their ex-boss and feed him information. This has been the basis of Narayanamurthy's wanting to run Infosys on a back-seat driving basis. One cannot comment whether this is good or not but it has surely damaged the Co. no end particularly when it's  performance has been lacking compared to its peers in the IT industry. Narayanamurthy's intervention in Infosys affairs is rather unfortunate and gives the impression that he does not want to let go of the Co. It is all the more dangerous considering that  Narayanamurthy in many of his recent TV interviews has shown himself to be quite incoherent. Hence the earlier the Co. reverts to professional management, if will be better but even that task has been made to be all the more difficult with the contenders for the CEO post chary of taking the assignment because of the founders guns being trained in them. Narayanamurthy's approach in these interventions also seems to stem from the fact that if Ratan Tata was able to dislodge Mistry and retain control of the Tata group why should I not try and do the same thing with Sikka and have at the least outside control of Infosys affairs which would mean wielding authority without responsibility which is not a good thing for the Co. But all in all a sad state of affairs in Indian corporate affairs where it is being brought out that when you scratch the skin, the typical Indian crab mentality spurts out even if you do it on holy grounds like corporate governance etc. etc.

Bank Strike On 22nd Aug Was Completely Irresponsible

The bank strike on 22nd Aug was completely irresponsible on the part of the bank unions. You do not strike 3 days before the Ganesh festival and expect people's sympathies to be with you. The unions should have realised the inconvenience they were putting the people in Western & Southern India where the festival is celebrated with great fervour in not being able to buy things and generally organise themselves for this annual festival. One would also believe that Lord Ganesha whom the bank employees also pray to would definitely not be pleased with their going back on strike and by the same example strike himself by withholding his blessings to them. The bank employees are now well paid and with computerisation the tedium of their workload has been reduced so one wonders why they should be striking from work time and again.

Lucky 7 Casino Ship Disaster & The Panjim Election Parrikar Is Banking Upon

Manohar Parrikar is back to his old tactics again of making multiple statements on any issue in the belief that people would not connect what he said. So one would presume that either he is a fool which he is surely not or that he has the firm belief that his audience in Goa are fools. So it must be the latter. This is a rather sad state of affairs for someone who is out canvassing for votes to win an election.

In this context consider what Parrikar said at different times about the Golden Globe Hotels owned Lucky 7 casino ship over the last one and half months or so. First, he said that the casino vessel is coming into the Mandovi based upon the High Court's order which is a fait accompli and the government cannot do anything about it. Later he said that the casino ship would not be allowed to come into the river which was echoed by the Captain of Ports. Now, last week he said that the Lucky 7 cannot be removed because there is gaping hole at the bottom of the ship which is enlarging with the movement of the ship because of the tides. Though this fact about the hole in the bottom of the vessel has been confirmed by later events, at the time Parrikar made the statement it sounded like yet another red herring he was drawing across the issue to justify the remaining of the vessel on Miramar beach. At that point in time this information was also not verifiable and in any case it is not up to the CM to come out with this kind of information but for the CoP which is the responsible authority. Was Parrikar trying to imply that the aground ship as likely to stay there for some time to come? Another point is that if the Lucky 7 ship was in such a bad condition as made out even earlier, how did the CoP give it a seaworthy certificate? This confirms the suspicion that all junk vessels in the name of casinos are being brought into the Mandovi and if and when the government asks them to move out of the river, the owners will throw up their hands and say that they are not seaworthy and therefore cannot be removed. The Mandovi will then become a junkyard of dead vessels! Parrikar was as is his usual practice seemed to be jumping the gun, so to speak.

Not only that he said that if the ship is pulled out with the gaping hole at the bottom now, the ship could sink some 200-300 meters from shore which would be a bigger ecological disaster. There is something very fishy, not that it is because the vessel is in the sea, about this whole Lucky 7 incident which smacks of it being manouevered into a River Princess kind of situation. For this reason Manohar Parrikar should arrange for an arrest warrant to be issued immediately against Gopal Kanda and the Directors of the Golden Globe Hotels under the Environmental Act for deliberately conniving to run the ship aground on Miramar beach thus endangering the environment of Goa by damaging its beaches specifically Miramar. Additionally there seems to be some help that was offered by the CoP office to the Lucky 7 owners to bring in the ship into the river, otherwise they would not have the guts to bring in the ship into the Mandovi. If so, the particular official should be hauled up and administrative action taken against him. This will at least show that Parrikar has the guts to translate his words into action. The reasons for this are given below.

The credibility of Gopal Kanda and that of the Golden Globe Hotels is very low considering criminal charges of corruption and that of murder and/or abetment of suicide in Haryana and Goa have been framed against him. One would probably find out that  Golden Globe Hotels stands to benefit by way of insurance claims by having the Lucky 7 ship run aground. That is precisely the reason possibly that they were trying to bring the ship into the river after the monsoon had started. Even as late as last week as reported in the papers when Arihant was recommending that the ship after part-repair of the hole at the bottom could be towed out to sea maybe upto Vasco, Golden Globe Hotels was still keen to bring the ship into the river! This is the dispute based on which Arihant it is understood quit the salvage operations and a new Co., Madgaonkar Salvage has been asked to bid for the project now. These are the typical ways in which these people in the shady businesses operate.

As we had seen in the River Princess the salvage Cos. are not beyond reproach since they would act in their best interests primary among which is to make money. Thus it is not in the realm of impossibility that the hole which emerged at the bottom of the Lucky 7 ship could have been deliberately created in connivance of Arihant and Golden Globe Hotels so that the ship remains aground which is also profitable for the salvagers in the long run. In all this they know that the Goa government are toothless paper tigers who will only bark but will not bite. Not only that making the ship running aground issue as difficult as possible the owners of the ship and the salvage operators will know at some point of time the government will have to bow down to public opinion and then share some of the costs of salvage and removal of debris etc. This we have seen in the River Princess case which is fair enough precedent.

As for public opinion Parrikar has stated that during his election campaign around Panjim, no one has asked him about the Lucky 7 stranded at Miramar beach and the possibilities of ecological damage. This comment is neither here nor there. Sometimes looking at the gravity of the situation people are completely dumbfounded as to how such an incident could happen. Or the disaster implications of the ship getting stranded is yet to dawn on most citizens. But Parrikar campaigning to represent the constituency and with more information about the incident than the citizens, should he not be more responsible and take action on his own to remove and/ or mitigate the disaster? Or will he wait for public opinion to build up like in the River Princess case and allow the matter to become a bigger issue.

All in all the Lucky 7 incident should be made an election issue for the upcoming Panjim poll showing the complete irresponsibility of Parrikar to allow the situation to develop to what it is today.

As for the Panjim election, Parrikar having earlier represented the city for 3 consecutive terms as MLA has done nothing for it inspite of tall claims. The same congestion prevails, the lack of planning is apparent, the garbage issue comes up every once in a while and the transport system is in a mess. Parrikar is wont to claim the IFFI infrastructure that he created. One needs to be factual in these matters. So for IFFI what he did was to demolish a heritage medical college building and give the land and newly built multiplex on which it was built to a multiplex operator at throwaway prices. Then he built the new Patto bridge in the wrong place which he has come to realise now with the 3rd Mandovi bridge having no way to land on the Panjim side without major demolitions of buildings.

Further Parrikar's frame of mind and ability to assess and recommend action on any issue can be judged from what he said at the convocation address at IIT Mumbai recently. He asked the engineers passing out to start schools and colleges to improve the standards of our educational system. Where engineers should do what they are trained to do and become the technical backbone of the country and maybe be encouraged to start industry or software units etc., here we have an engineer asking them to get into the educational business! Why? Because he moved into politics! Being an alumni of IIT Mumbai, Parrikar would surely know that the government spends Rs. 25 Lakhs every year on each IIT student. So if they do not remain in their trained field, would this money not be wasted?

Thus Parrikar seeking election from Panjim is a no-no considering his lack of performance in earlier terms and sheer inconsistency in anticipating problems like the Lucky 7 case and inability to guide people wisely. But after all it is the choice of Panjimites, let them decide!

Kala Academy For The Traditional Ashtami Fair!

The papers inform that the traditional Ashtami fair is being moved to Kala Academy. This is an ill-advised move considering that the Kala Academy is a cultural and educational venue and it should be kept as such. The fair is linked to purchases for the upcoming Ganesh festival and the best place for it is its present location on the DB Marg proximate to the Panjim market. Purchasers are then provided the convenience of the fair as well as the market to complete their buying. If traffic problems are an issue then we can bear with it since the fair is for only a week and if at all has to be shifted then move it to the Campal area either the Football Ground or the parade grounds. The Kala Academy environment should be allowed to remain that of an art and culture institution and not bring commercial considerations into it. But for the annual Lokotsav festival and fair at Kala Academy that is related to the folk arts and crafts, the trend to use the venue for shopping festivals, real estate promos etc. should be stopped unless Kala Academy absolutely needs the money due to lack of funding from the government.

Mridula Sinha As The Governor of Goa

Last week there was news that Mridula Sinha had completed 3 years as the Governor of Goa. There has been nothing notable in her tenure except for the one major gaffe where a couple of months ago she is supposed to have called up Arun Jaitley in wanting to know if she should accept when Manohar Parrikar staked a claim to government without having a majority after the Assembly elections and without calling as per convention the party that won the largest number of seats, in this case the Congress. What else could Jaitley say, but - Yes! Governors have really no place in our democracy except as a decorative position but when they are called upon at times to play a crucial role, they are found wanting like Mridula Sinha in the above case. Earlier for a person like her of advanced age and a reasonable track record of performance in her field, she had shown lack of judgment and a certain amount of irresponsibility by going to deliver the opening address of an Assembly session and midway through her speech claiming ill-health and returning back to Raj Bhawan. It would have been more tactful to not go at all and have her speech read out at the Assembly session anticipating her being unwell. Even schoolchildren are taught to do that let alone a grandmother to be told this. Goa has in the last 3 or 4 terms seen Governors who come for a break in the sun, sand and surf like a cushy vacation what with a wonderful Governor's Palace which is a great place for extended family and friends to come and visit all at State expense. The Cabo Raj Niwas as the Raj Bhawan is called here used to be the Portuguese Governor's residence and is located just off Dona Paula in Panjim on a promontory that juts into the sea and gives you a 300  degrees view of the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea which few residences in India can offer. So go in peace, Mridula Sinha, for the rest of your term since your vacation has not many years to go. Governors are a leftover position of the British Raj and over the years in India the office has been politicised and forms the position where leftovers of the incumbent party in power to shut their mouths. For these reasons it should be forthwith abolished.

                                          Venkiah Naidu As Vice President

Venkiah Naidu has been sworn as the Vice President of India but he should not forget to honour the responsibilities and decorum of that Chair. Naidu is often known to vent his opinion on each and every matter which more often than not has got himself into hot water on many occasions. Being Vice President he needs to understand that it is necessary to curb these tendencies and show reserve which is required for that position.

Lucky 7 Fiasco Reaching Alarming Proportions

The casino ship Lucky 7 fiasco that has run aground at the Miramar beach is taking shades of the River Princess saga with no one be it the owners or authorities or government being seen responsible for the shape that the issue is going to take. The beautiful Miramar beach, the pride of Panjim and the must-visit location on every tourist's list coming to Goa will be permanently scarred by Lucky 7 (which seems to be proving very 'unlucky' for Panjim residents  and Goa in general). Though both the CoP and the CM have made statements that the ship would not be allowed in the Mandovi which is a relief but why did it come in, in the first place and that too once the rainy season had started? For this misadventure the owners of the Lucky 7 should be levied a stiff fine, asked to bear the costs of restoration of Miramar beach where the ship has run aground and their licence to run a casino in Goa cancelled forthwith for corporate irresponsibility and for all time.

                                                            AAP Is A Dead Party

The AAP given its antics lately what with the Ram Jethmalani mess-up seems that the party is on its way to being dead and gone. One could also say that 'rigor mortis' has already set in the party at the national level and in a few months the winding up procedure will commence. Arvind Kejriwal & Co. have had enough of their political foray in all contexts economic and otherwise and will vanish from the political scene shortly. With this it is yet another bunch of talented individuals whose minds have been swayed by the temptations of power and lucre that have hit the dust in the Indian political arena.

Arvind Panagariya's Departure

Arvind Panagariya, the Vice Chairman of the Niti Aayog, the new re-incarnation of the stodgy Planning Commission, has left! He claims that he had come for a term of 2 years and with it getting over, he had to leave. He also says that the Columbia University job in academia that he is returning to is the kind of job that he will 'never' get again. If you read between the lines in these statements then you will see that Panagariya found the 'hot seat' a little too hot for his liking and not willing to risk his reputation any further, he decided to pull the plug on the assignment. It is not easy in government to get things moving and this is what he realised since even in academia things move faster and your peer level or those with whom you interact there are not sluggish and overly bureaucratic.

And for the kind of job that he will 'never' get again - Was leading the economic charge of the world's 'fastest growing' economy and with major 'reforms' like Demonetisation, Cashless or Less-Cash Economy and GST, with other 'earth-shaking' measures to follow, was this not an assignment to challenge what he has in academia. Come on, Panagariya, come clean and say that hiding your face in books back at Columbia University was safer than wait for all the mess of the reforms undertaken to unravel. One must, however, compliment Panagariya on getting his timing right but the sad thing is that when these people come to take up the assignments, it is 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' but as soon as they find things not going their way, they are the first to bail out from a sinking ship or slink away noiselessly. Where is the patriotism then?

RBI Rate Cut

We have the RBI Governor Urjit Patel and the institution standing up for what it believes in and reducing the interest rates by only 0.25%. This in the face of the deliberate talking down of the interest rates which had started off about a month back with Arvind Subramaniam, the Economic Advisor to the Finance Ministry, extolling the virtues that would be bestowed on the Indian economy in the event of a substantial rate cut. Then the papers since then were plugging in with various news items on a sectoral basis as to how lower interest rates would rejuvenate the economy. Even until yesterday, 2nd August, the media was full of the slump in sales in the auto industry and how an interest rate cut would give a fillip to sales with auto loans getting cheaper. The new 6% lending rate has been stated to be the lowest since 2010 which the government is not happy about since it was expecting a deeper cut. Though in this assumption the Finance Ministry may be right but then a sharper fall would have set the cat among the pigeons which the RBI was probably unwilling to risk now. Inflation is still not down and there is a gap it seems from what the economic indices communicate and what the prices in the marketplace are reflecting. The government in its own interest and for the sake of credibility needs to close this gap. But all credit to the RBI for showing that it still has some spine since during and just after demonetisation  one would have thought that it was made of rubber. But Urjit Patel as King of RBI is still in his counting house counting all his worthless money in terms of demonetised notes and is yet to come out with the figures of how many of the Rs. 500 & Rs. 1000 notes came back.

Refer Dokalam Issue to ICJ

On the Dokalam stand-off with China  we should refer the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the Hague. The benefits of this are two-fold. The first is that the Dokalam issue fires that are running high now will be doused and it will be pushed to the back-burner. Second, a clear decision acceptable to all three countries involved - India, China & Bhutan - would emerge. Though China is known not to accept the ICJ's rulings sometimes.

Bio-Pics Are Best Avoided

The ghost of bio-pics that has descended on the heads of Bollywood has to be dislodged somehow. There is some sense in making bio-pics on people who have passed on like Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and to a certain extent like on Milkha Singh and Pan Singh Tomar but having a bio-pic on Sachin, which has been variously described as a self-aggrandising documentary purely made to make money and add to the wealth of the individual, seems to be improper. This tendency is being further pushed to extremes with bio-pics being planned on Sania Nehwal and even Sindhu. On the other end of the societal spectrum we have a bio-pic on crime bosses like Gawli which is up for release shortly and also on Dawood Ibrahim. One wonders whether film makers around the world are running out of stories since while Hollywood is making pics on comic strip characters like Batman, Superman etc and on video games and their characters, we have Bollywood getting tired of copying stories from Hollywood and taking their home-spun heroes and heroines and spinning yarns around them. Where money does most of the talking Bollywood will probably be brought to reality on bio-pics since Sachin - The Movie does not seem to have done very well at the box office.

Kudos To The Performance Of Mithali Raj and Team In The Women's ODI World Cup

Mithali Raj and her teammates had done a commendable job in reaching the women's ODI World Cup finals and in the final match yesterday, 23rd July 2017 they put up a brave show. Cricket is called a game of glorious uncertainty and losing by just 9 runs to England and bringing the match to such a close finish is very creditable to our ladies that wield the willow. At last here they put up a good show and lost to a better team while their male counterparts  conceded the match to arch rivals Pakistan just last month by handing it over on a platter by way of rank misjudgment and  bad performance. Concluding Mithali Raj and her team should strive more in the future and keep the Indian flag flying high around the world in women's cricket.

Examine The Fine Print Of The Reliance Jio 'Free' Phone Offer

With great fanfare Mukesh Ambani launched the Jio 4G feature phone at 'zero' price but with a deposit of Rs. 1500 and with a target through the Jio network to cover 99% of the country. Ambitious plans, indeed! With the Ambanis, it has always been the expectation that they will move into any area with a resounding and unconventional manner. This has become a tradition with the Reliance group. However, with every venture apart from the pros there is always a con associated with it. This negative streak has run through the two generations running from Dhirubai to now Mukesh and Anil from allegations of over-capacity that plagued the Reliance group to the fancy financial jugglery to avoid paying the government and sharing output on their oil exploration ventures to irregularities in the STPP contracts bid by them.  To bring the offer on the Jio phone to reality, we need to realise that there is nothing that the Ambanis give 'free'. Since you are paying Rs. 1500 and you are with Reliance  Jio and not leaving the network, that is the price of the phone in the first instance. It is only when you leave the Reliance Jio network that you get back the deposit. And that is your own money of Rs. 1500 but not the instalments that would have been deducted. So the Jio phone is not 'free'. It is only a ploy to sell the phone and the network.

To outline the improper dealings of  Reliance Telecom led by Anil Ambani when they came up almost a decade ago with a similar 'monsoon' offer of buying a mobile handset of Samsung make for  'just' Rs. 500 but with your call package an amount of about Rs. 250 would be appropriated towards the cost of the phone every month. The deduction was not made explicitly clear to the subscriber. I had purchased the Reliance Telecom 'monsoon' offer Samsung phone and within the 36 months warranty the phone went out of order. When I went to Reliance to get the phone replaced, I was told to go to Samsung, who refused to replace the phone since they claimed they had already paid Reliance for the warranty costs and they had nothing to do about it. When I went back to Reliance with the Samsung rejection I was refused replacement of the phone again. This prompted me to look at the fine print and track all my bills over the almost 3 years that I had the Reliance/Samsung phone. That is where I found that every month I was paying approx. Rs. 250 for the phone in addition to the Rs. 500 paid upfront. Thus for the 3 year period Relaince would be recovering Rs. 9500 for the phone which for those times was clear robbery on the telecom highway. In addition Reliance Telecom while billing out of Pune at that time had this habit of despatching  the bills late so that you would always get the bills after the due date resulting in a Rs. 20 charge for delayed payment. Not only that instead of the standard 5/4 rounding off of billed amounts  Reliance would round off even Rs. 0.25 to the next higher Rupee. Thus if you assume a 1 million subscriber base that Reliance Telecom had then, you can imagine the rip-off. It would be for delayed payment even assuming they would do this for just 50% of the customers Rs. 100 Lakhs  or Rs. 1 crore and by the unconventional rounding-off another Rs. 10  Lakhs. Thus each month Reliance Telecom would make Rs. 110 Lakhs in unauthorised revenue, that is Rs. 1320 Lakhs in a year. These are definitely not small amounts. When this was brought to the notice of Anil Ambani and seeking a refund of all money I had paid them for the phone if they were not able to replace the phone free of charge, I did get a response from his office but the real intent of settling the issue was shown when I sent a letter to P Chidambaram, the then Finance Minister with proof of the Improper dealings of  Reliance Telecom. Within a fortnight Reliance Telecom sent a person to my home and refunded me Rs. 6000 approx . that was due to me and that too in cash since I had refused to take a cheque from Reliance Telecom.

Thus for all those who want to jump at the Reliance Jio offer be wary, read the fine print and then take a considered decision before you put in your money. Like they say - Look Before You Leap. Times have changed. Things may now be better with Reliance but we all know it is difficult to straighten out a dog's tail and it is best to tread with caution.
